Simply depending on Google’s search results is not going to get you steady traffic.

Think of your website as a store and the traffic coming to it as you walk in customers. Can you really depend on them? What if it rains? What if some other store is having a sale? There are many things that can drive traffic away from your site just as if it was an actual store. There are just too many variables that influence Google’s search results.

Seo is an ever changing field, and you can’t depend on it alone. There will always be algorithm changes and new sites to compete with. Not to mention that Google expects you to work on your brand before it actually helps your ranking. Check out my post on the experience trap to find out more.

Getting traffic from other sources

get to know your target audience. Find there forums and blogs. Make sure your in from of them every time. As Pat Flynn likes to say, be everywhere. I for one didn’t get to his site from a search result. I found him it a post about building your creditability on the moz blog. You should do the same. At the moment this blog is only 4 months old and still taking baby steps. But I have to say this strategy is working. Most of my traffic is from articles and forum threads.

And as I keep working on more exposure the traffic will keep growing. I’m not telling you to give up on seo, I just don’t want you to depend on it too heavily and be disappointed. As always I’ll see you in a few days with a new post, if you like this post share it with your friends.
